TNL Micromanagers

Last updated 2/26/2024

Micromanagers approved for TNL 2024

The following micromanagers are approved for TNL 2024.  All managers must install all of these micromanagers.

  • Buck Miller 2024 I through V
  • Buck Miller 2018 I through V
  • Hooks Foreman 2024
  • Sparks McEvoy 2021
  • Alexander Cartwright I 2017

The Buck Miller zip files contain all five versions, I through V.

The file naming convention on all Buck Miller micromanagers changed in 2021. Only the newer versions below, with the four-digit year in the name, are approved for TNL 2024.

Hooks Foreman 2024.zip

Sparks McEvoy 2021.zip

Alexander Cartwright I 2017.zip

Duke Robinson, Jr., a standard micromanager in Version 5.75, is still approved for TNL use.

No other micromanagers, including other versions of Buck Miller, are currently approved for TNL use.

Micromanager differences

Alexander Cartwright I is a general-purpose manager who can be used for any season. He and Buck Miller 2018 are the only ones of these micromanagers who do not have an “opener” strategy.

Hooks Foreman pulls starters early so that they can pitch every fourth day. Sparks McEvoy is similar to Foreman, but pulls starters early so that they can pitch every fifth day. They are both otherwise similar to Buck Miller IV.

All comments below apply to both Buck Miller 2018 and Buck Miller 2024 versions.

Miller I and II will set aside a starting rotation of the 5 pitchers with the most starts. You would only want to use one of these managers if your five best starters also had the most actual starts.

Miller III, IV, and V do not set aside a rotation, so if you are using them, you must bench all of your starting pitchers in all of your lineups, or else they may be used in relief.  (Benching starters is a really good idea regardless of what MM you use.)

Miller I and III and Cartwright I select closers by saves.

Miller II, IV, and V select closers by “adjusted” grades (grades plus or minus control ratings, possibly also factoring in home run ratings).

For most teams, Buck Miller 2018 III and IV will continue to be the best choices.

Installing Micromanagers in 5.75

(from APBA Baseball Version 5.75 User’s Guide)

APBA Baseball Micromanagers are generally provided in one of two formats: a self-extracting exe file, or a compressed zip file. Regardless of which way the Manager is packaged, the key to installing him correctly in Version 5.75 is to point to the correct output folder when you are unpacking the files.
C:\BBW is NOT the correct install folder for Managers in APBA Baseball Version 5.75.

For Windows 10/11, the default Manager folder is:

C:\Users\Public\Documents\APBA Games\Baseball\MicroManagers

Use the navigation aid (usually a “Browse” button) that is provided by the self-extracting exe file or by your zip file unpacking utility (Windows Explorer, WinZip, 7-Zip, etc.) to navigate to the proper folder as listed above, and unzip the Manager files into that folder.
